Review: Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

All I can say is “Wow!” I’m speechless with wonder, with awe at the twists and turns the story had taken. Though I’m expecting things not to go swimmingly for Mia, I never imagined the routes the plot would take to bring her to where she was by the end of the book.

Mia just keeps on evolving throughout the series. In the first book, she is out for revenge against the three men who are instrumental in murdering her family. In the second book, she has not forgotten this purpose, yet, she now sees other things, too, like how the riches that are enjoyed by the few are provided by broken backs and blood of the many. And what she has seen, she cannot forget. What would Mia do about these things, if she even can? Continue reading

Review: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

garden

I had this book in my Kindle for months, and my thought when I finally cracked it open was: Why did I just start this now?

But better late than never.

NEVERNIGHT is a compelling, surprisingly delightful novel about assassins (is there an oxymoron there somewhere?). The author painted a sympathetic picture of the heroine, who though she trained to be an assassin to avenge her family, never quite lost her humanity.

The worldbuilding is superb, the story intricately plotted–the twist at the end totally took me by surprise. Love it!! The footnotes are a nice touch; they added history and depth to the world. And humor/comic relief, though Mister Kindly had that job, too. Or…could it be…that he’s the narrator? Continue reading

Top Reads in 2017

Here are my top reads in 2017. Definitely highly recommended too!

It’s always a great pleasure to read any one of Tessa Dare’s books, not the least of which is the witty banter between her main characters, and her prose, which is also witty, refreshing and almost poetic….THE DUCHESS DEAL is more than the fairy tale; it goes much deeper to plumb at the hurt and insecurity on Ash’s side, and how, underneath his beastly appearance, he is very much a man in need of love…The entire story is sweet and romantic, and this book is going right on my keeper shelf! Definitely worth a reread or two!

WINTERSONG is magical, with a fairy tale atmosphere that is heightened by the lovely, lyrical writing. Though there are echoes of Labyrinth (my favorite childhood movie!), the author took it beyond that to create a story and characters that are unforgettable and that will live in you long after you have finished reading the book. I can say definitely that WINTERSONG is a book that will go on my keeper shelf and that I will reread over and over until I have wrung the last bit of magic from it.

LOVE STORY is a hot, sexy romantic read with unforgettable characters and plenty of angst. Ooh, the angst! I love it and I love this story a lot. This is definitely going on my keeper shelf!…I love that the author gave us two individuals who are relatable in terms of financial and emotional aspects. Who hasn’t scrimped due to budget considerations, or looked for cheap places to stay when traveling? I also love how human and flawed Reece is, a standout among arrogantly confident alpha males. Definitely a must read!

DISENCHANTED is one of the best fairy-tale retellings of Cinderella I’ve read. Susan Carroll writes a compelling tale that is full of magic and enchantment, yet also flawed and very human characters. Needless to say, I was in love from the first page, and I can’t wait to read more! It was great to see the author spin the original tale into something vivid and rich, lush and three-dimensional. You can bet I’m looking forward to the next book/s in the series!

THE WRONG KIND OF COMPATIBLE is amazingly hot, funny and intense with unforgettable, geeky characters. Two thumbs up!! I’ve always liked geeky characters, but Cassie and Drew are the best I’ve read so far. I love their banter, especially the geeky one-liners that were so full of sexual innuendos–whether intentional or not. Each interaction, each word that comes out of their mouth reinforces that these are brilliant, brainy people, and I have to applaud the author for being able to totally immerse the reader in her world. Highly recommended! This is definitely going on my keeper shelf!

I’m speechless with wonder, with awe at the twists and turns the story had taken. The twists and turns are shocking and the revelations astounding. Everything happened very fast, leaving me stunned. I couldn’t turn the virtual pages fast enough. And the very last scene!! All I can say is book #3 is going to be very interesting indeed.
