Not So Human
Series: Faerietales Book 1
Genre: Contemporary Fantasy
Publication Date: February 22, 2015
Two new wings… One Preservation problem.
Sabrina might not care for everything about herself, but she’s still used to being a human, an orphan and an everyday average American. However, her life changes forever the day she’s followed home by four unsmiling men in dark suits and sinister shades.
A crash-course in reality reveals that she’s actually a faerie princess, with a royal family in Scotland and some particularly brutal enemies hunting her down in the U.S. Fleeing the country doesn’t solve her problems though. It only adds to them.
With her new tiara to try on for size and a potential romance that seems bound to go badly before it begins, Sabrina still has to stay one wing ahead of the Human Preservation and Advancement Committee. Which has made its mission to ruin her life. Permanently.

Interview

Thank you for dropping by to tell us more about your book, Jeannette!

Please tell us something unique about you that we can’t learn from your bio.

I’m addicted to garlic buttery crust pepperoni pizza Hot Pockets. They’re just so cheap and convenient and tasty with all that melted cheese.

With that said, I’m addicted to just about anything that resembles a pepperoni pizza. So those little Tostino pizza rolls? Yes, please.

What’s your favorite part of writing?

I love seeing where the story goes as I write. I don’t plan any of my plots out, though I typically think I have an idea where they’re going. Yet they almost always surprise me somehow, someway.

Characters who were supposed to die refuse to do so. Protagonists who weren’t supposed to fall in love end up tripping head over heels.

My creations don’t care a whit what their author wants. They just do what they want to do during the writing process. I’m just there for the ride until it’s time to edit – then I’m the boss.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve learned while researching a book?

There are a few “strangest things” that come to mind, but some of the Scottish vocabulary choices my British editor added into the Faerietales series were pretty entertainingly unique.

For example, “numpty” is apparently an idiot. Having studied abroad in England for a semester, I already knew a bunch of English insults. But some of the Scottish ones are pretty tops too.

If you could live in one of your stories, which one would you choose and why?

I don’t think it would be any of the Faerietales stories. They were totally fun to write, but living through them would be a bit too traumatic for me. I’m an absolute wuss when it comes to physical pain.

I’d probably have to choose the second book in my historical fiction series instead, Designing America. The main villain in there is an actual historical character and one of the most fascinating bad guys I’ve ever worked with.

What’s your inspiration for the Faerietales series? What connects all the stories?

My original inspiration for Not So Human was simply that I was stuck at a dead-end temp job and had literally nothing to do most days. For me, that’s torture. After I started though, the premises for each new book just kept coming.

Except with Book 5, which I’ll be publishing in a few weeks. That’s it! Poor Sabrina deserves to go off and live happily ever after now considering everything I put her through.

As for what connects the stories together, I’d say it’s just great characters who couldn’t stop giving me great plots to run with.

Tell us about Sabrina. What kind of person is she?

The first adjective that springs to mind when I think of Sabrina is “snarky.” She likes sarcastic banter, and she’s more than ready to roll her eyes at people she perceives to be stupid.

But after that, I’d go with loyal. She’s fiercely protective of the people she loves – whether human or faerie – and she’s usually very quick to stand by her convictions and ethical code.

With that said, like every other semi-rational creature out there, she still has her breaking point… something the Human Preservation and Advancement Committee is always willing to explore if at all possible.

What is the Human Preservation and Advancement Committee? Why are they making life hard for Sabrina?

The HPAC is a faerie-hating society that’s all about either wiping winged humanoids off the face of the earth or experimenting on them. They’re pretty diabolical – hence the reason why I wouldn’t want to be in Sabrina’s shoes – but I love how each subsequent novel in the series ends up revealing a new perspective of them.

The HPAC is never a good organization. They’re shameless bigots from start to finish. With that said, there are so many personalities and motivations involved, which make them more nuanced and therefore more fascinating.

Who is your favorite character in the series? Why?

I seriously, seriously hate to say this – and not just because I think I’m starting to sound a bit villain-obsessed – but I think I have to go with the HPAC villain in Book 4: Wing and Dagger.

He’s a very likable character to a sometimes irritating degree. Basically the kind of person you’d want to hang out with even while he’s angling his knife to stab you in the back.

The jerk.

Sounds interesting! What stories do you wish you could write/have written?

Oh, I have so many other stories I’m planning on writing. Too many of them, in fact. But some are simply never going to happen.

For instance, I’d really love to write the story about my time studying abroad in England as a college student.

There was so much reality-TV-level drama going on there, complete with backstabbing, delusional reasoning, boy-girl drama galore, examples of both American and British embarrassments.

I’m telling you. It would make an awesome book. I’ll probably never touch it though, since I think I’d end up hurting too many people’s feelings in the process.

I understand you’re an editor too. Which do you like better: writing or editing. Why?

Honestly, I really enjoy both. When it comes to writing my own novels, there’s that rush of the unknown. And when it comes to editing them, I love the challenge of smoothing out a sometimes very rough picture.

There’s so much to love about my editorial business too. I feel as if there are two things this world is sorely lacking, and that’s genuine encouragement and genuine feedback. Running Innovative Editing, I get to give both and watch the writers I work with become stronger and more confident at their craft as a result.
