ARCHANGEL’S CONSORT continues where Archangel’s Kiss left off, about 3 to 4 months after the stunning fight that left Beijing a crater.
Here, we see Elena and Raphael continue to develop and build the foundation of their relationship. Raphael still continues to push at boundaries, but Elena more than held her ground on those things that she felt are very important to her. Aside from that, however, they have to deal with the effects of Raphael’s mother possibly rising from her Sleep, and the effects are felt worldwide–weather disturbances, earthquakes, tsunami, vampires running rampant, and Raphael in the grip of a rage that Elena had never seen before and that left her terrified and fighting for her Archangel.
Reading the first three books of this series back-to-back, some of the words and phrases used are starting to get repetitive, especially with regard to Elena and Raphael’s relationship. Elena is always referred to by Raphael as his immortal/consort/Elena with the mortal heart, and it’s starting to get sickening. I come to dread their sexy scenes as well, and there are many here, because well, what’s new? The sex seems to be how Elena soothes Raphael back from when he goes into his cold Archangel persona, or how Raphael soothes Elena when she has a nightmare or confronted with hard truths she cannot/don’t want to deal with yet. There are also two different instances where Raphael had two different things for Elena, and each time, Elena said that if she hadn’t given her heart to her archangel, she’d have given it to him right then and there. (The first instance happened in Archangel’s Kiss and the second happened in this book.)
The only treat for me in this book is I get to see Elena spar with Raphael. And of course, we get hints that Elena is not as she seems, that there’s some mystery to her bloodline. Elena is also a bit insecure, which makes her human (well, she was a mortal in book #1) and relatable.
While I’d love to know more about Elena’s identity (background) and certainly more of Raphael and Elena in the future, I think I’m ready for a break from them. Good thing too, because it’s Dmitri’s story next!
