I’m now reading Gameboard of the Gods, Age of X Book 1, and I’m loving it so far. Okay, generally loving it. There are some parts I didn’t like much, but it’s a series I definitely want to read on. More on my review to be posted later.
I’ve never read a Richelle Mead book, but if this is how she writes adult books, then sign me on! So far, I like her writing style, the plot/worldbuilding/story is meaty; 400+ pages! Did I tell you I love thick books? Love them!
So, here are the books so far:
Book #1 Gameboard of the Gods
The truth is, when you banish the gods from the world, they eventually come back—with a vengeance.
In the near future, Justin March lives in exile from the Republic of United North America. After failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims, Justin is surprised when he is sent back with a peculiar assignment—to solve a string of ritualistic murders steeped in seemingly unexplainable phenomena.
Justin’s return comes with an even bigger shock: His new partner and bodyguard, Mae Koskinen, is a prætorian, one of the Republic’s technologically enhanced supersoldiers. Mae’s inexplicable beauty and aristocratic upbringing attract Justin’s curiosity and desire, but her true nature holds more danger than anyone realizes.
As their investigation unfolds, Justin and Mae find themselves in the crosshairs of mysterious enemies. Powers greater than they can imagine have started to assemble in the shadows, preparing to reclaim a world that has renounced religion and where humans are merely gamepieces on their board.
Book #2 The Immortal Crown
Gameboard of the Gods introduced religious investigator Justin March and Mae Koskinen, the beautiful supersoldier assigned to protect him. Together they have been charged with investigating reports of the supernatural and the return of the gods, both inside the Republic of United North America and out. With this highly classified knowledge comes a shocking revelation: Not only are the gods vying for human control, but the elect—special humans marked by the divine—are turning against one another in bloody fashion.
Their mission takes a new twist when they are assigned to a diplomatic delegation headed by Lucian Darling, Justin’s old friend and rival, going into Arcadia, the RUNA’s dangerous neighboring country. Here, in a society where women are commodities and religion is intertwined with government, Justin discovers powerful forces at work, even as he struggles to come to terms with his own reluctantly acquired deity.
Meanwhile, Mae—grudgingly posing as Justin’s concubine—has a secret mission of her own: finding the illegitimate niece her family smuggled away years ago. But with Justin and Mae resisting the resurgence of the gods in Arcadia, a reporter’s connection with someone close to Justin back home threatens to expose their mission—and with it the divine forces the government is determined to keep secret.
Book #3 The Eye of Andromeda – possibly coming in 2016
Here’s what Richelle Mead has to say: “Unfortunately, I don’t have a hard release date, due to various publishing industry type reasons that I won’t bore you with. I’m hopeful for next year. Here’s what I can tell you to tide you over: it’s called The Eye of Andromeda and won’t be the last book in the series. As for what it’s about…well, let’s put it this way: Justin thought he had a hard time working for his god, but it’s nothing compared to what Mae’s about to go through.”
Oooh, can’t wait!
In her Facebook page, on July 20, here’s a Q&A from Richelle:
Reader Q: Hello, I was just wondering if you’ll be writing another supernatural/fantasy themed series any time in the near future?
Richelle A: My next book, Soundless, comes out November 10 and is a fantasy inspired by ancient China. It takes place in a village where no one has been able to hear for generations–until a teen girl wakes up one morning with her hearing restored. This drives her–and her ex!–to go on a quest to learn how to save their people from a dark secret threatening to destroy them all.Soundless is a stand-alone, and then I’ll have a new (and currently top secret) series. All I can tell you about it is that it’s a totally new world and has girls having adventures, fighting for what they want, and facing complicated romances. You’ll like it…I mean, you will if you’re into that kind of stuff.
My first response was I can’t wait! But then this looks YA, so I’m not sure since I haven’t read her YA books. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
